We can't believe is the last long weekend of the summer, but we are not ready to say goodbye to warm weather (it's 30 degrees in Toronto today!), easy breezy dressing and outdoor entertainment. With a weekend packed with social activity we wanted to share our go to hostess gift, it's usually a coffee bag, a jar of chimichurri or some Dulce de Leche! To make it pretty we usually wrap them in one of our teatowels. Our friends are always so happy to get the little treat! The new restaurant at ABC home&carpert ABC kitchen was everything you expect from them and more! aside from the perfect mix of rustic and modern elements the food was out of this world, it was a great treat at the end of an intense work day at the show, check out their website to read more about the philosophy behind their organic menu

The Stour Dinnerware is named after a river whose source is in Wiltshire, England. This series of dinnerware was inspired by the river's bends and it's beautiful surroundings. Every piece is hand-made, while emphasizing the organic shapes, making them simultaneously elegant and informal.

As many of you know, this past weekend we celebrated Joaquin's first birthday =)!, it was so much fun to see his expressions of joy with all the attention around him, and it was also great fun for me to plan, many of you asked about it so I thought I would share my inspiration as well as some great resources worth checking out for your next party!

I did the invitations myself with paper from The Paper Place on and to close the envelopes I used dotted aqua tape

As favours each kid received a canvas bag with their name stamped on it, and inside we put a wooden puzzle as well as a coloring wooden frame from Michaels (replacing the picture paper with the same paper we used on the pennant flags)

the vending machine capsules are also from SSL and were a great hit among the kids!

This was my favorite item of the party, a beautiful birthday crown that my sister made from scrap fabric, is just such a great memento!

When you are a shop owner sometimes the line between work & play gets blurry, but yesterday was truly a fun family day sourcing new products for the store, we ventured to the One of a Kind Show and it was such a delight how baby friendly it was, there was lots of aisle space for the stroller and even gourmet mashed potatoes for Joaquin!
We met ceramist Hugo Didier from "Not made in China" and he is going to develop a special line for us, I can't wait to show you :)
We will also be carrying the line of accessories by Jenna Rose, we think it will be a match made in Merceria heaven!
And to reward ourselves for our hard work at the show we finished the day La Merceria with Juan's famous carrot cake, yum! if you haven't tried it yet please do, it will change your life :)

I finally made some time this weekend to devour the March/April Issue of LONNY and what a pleasure it was, full of Spring inspiration, I love the rose dress from Stella McCartney which for sure will translate into home, and my other favorite find was Ines de la Fressange's new book:Parisian Chic,a style guide, I must get a copy! Lonny is the closest we have to Domino Magazine now I just keep hoping for hard copy distribution because there is nothing like the ritual of going through the actual paper version curled up on the couch with a glass of wine!

This is where it all started, a few years ago with a cup of coffee in Buenos Aires, Marcelo & I dreamt about our future Merceria!, we couldn't help but be inspired about the attention to detail ( I always thought it was lovely how you always get a small sweet treat with your coffee!) and the devotion to such daily pleasures, last November we found ourselves in the same spots in BA in awe that our dreams of opening the shop had become a reality and more inspired than ever! so we look forward to sharing that inspiration with you and to providing many more daily pleasures!

Argentinean cooking at Julia and Julieta

We're shivering away in the great white north, so when we came across this San Franciscan food blog created by two Argentineans, we were inspired by dreams of warm climates and good cooking. Julia and Julieta publish beautiful photographs of their delicious recipes - the preparation is mouth watering, and we tried out this savoury broccoli pie with oh so satisfying results!

They have a great variation on a chimichurri marinade that we can't wait to try out for ourselves and compare against Marcelo's mom's recipe!

Yesterday was a beautiful day to go skating, bundled up and gliding beneath the glittering snowfall.. Whether you venture to the new skating trail that opened up in the west end, enjoy the city lights in nathan phillips square, or look out over lake ontario while skating at the harbourfront, we hope you have a wonderful winter weekend!

Winter Baking

January has been a chilly month, and while it's had some sunny fluffy snow dreamy days, we're a little bit ready for something warmer. So we've been indulging in great indoor activities to make us smile. We've been inspired to bake some delicious treats, and as we have a certain appreciation for all things coffee, we've been checking out some recipes from the New Complete Coffee Book by Sara Perry. 

One of our favourite La Merceria products is this cookbook holder from  Berard - gorgeous olive wood and tempered glass, it will prop up your  book and protect the pages from the whiles of whipping up something  delicious!

We've put away our red and green for the year, found a second life for our beautiful handmade shell garland, and brought warm wood and shades of blue to our fresh winter palette.
